It’s necessary to teach your children the importance of doing housework at an early age.

By allowing children, even as young as two, to help out with housework, you not only help them learn the basic life skills they’ll need as adults, but also make them feel like they are a necessary part of the family.

Christine Field, writer of Life Skills for Kids, says it’s important for parents to ask children to take part in household chores.

“When my son was about one year oldhe loved to be with me when I was folding clothes,” said Field, a lawyer-turned-full-time mom, to the newspaper. “Of course, he wasn’t any help. But I would still give him towels to fold. Now Daniel is three years old, and he’s our towel man. He folds all the towels and puts them in the closet. He feels like he is needed. He feels like he is depended on.”

Letting your children help you with tasks also gives you time to teach them and feel close to them.

Put a playful spin on chores. Whether it’s cleaning up to a favorite tune or turning housework into a game, kids will be more active to do chores if fun is part of the job.

Experts give the following suitable chores for young children:

* Pick up and put away personal items (toys, clothes).

* Do the laundry, or fold clothes.

* Make the bed.

* Set the table.

* Water plants.

* Feed pets.

Gestures are the “silent languages” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.

In the United Stated, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug(拥抱).

       Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and half feet (69 centimeters) away and at an angle (角度), so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me”, or “Excuse me”.

       Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.

       For Americans, “thumbs up” means yes, very good, or well done. “Thumbs down” means the opposite. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger (食指). Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and at them on the head when they admire them.

       Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing(令人迷惑的). If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.

(   ) 51. From the first paragraph we can conclude that _______.

A. we learn a language well without its body language

B. gestures can help us to express our meaning

(   ) 55. When your friend gives you a thumb-up, he, in fact, _______.

A. shows his anger to you                      B. shows his rudeness to you

C. expresses his satisfaction to you            D. expresses his worries about you

(D)

A bully is a boy or a girl who acts mean (unkind) or hurtful to others. Bullies sometimes hit, kick, or push to hurt people, and they sometimes use words to call names or scare them. A bully might say mean things about someone, take a kid’s possessions or make fun of someone on purpose. Some bullies force people to do things they don’t want to do.

Why do bullies act so badly? Just to look for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or a way to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important—when they pick on someone else, it makes them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they’ve seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves.

Bullying can be a big pain, but you don't have to let bullying get the best of you. Sometimes just acting bravely is enough to stop a bully. If you walk by and hold your head high as though you’re not afraid, a bully may be less likely to give you trouble.  Bullies want a big reaction to their meanness. Acting as if you don’t notice and don’t care is like giving no reaction at all, and this just might stop a bully’s behavior.  If you are being bullied, it’s very important to tell an adult. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom helpers at school can all help to stop bullying.  Don’t hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully, and it’s dangerous, too, because someone could get hurt.

(   ) 56. Which of the following is advisable if you are being bullied?

            A. Giving the bullies a satisfactory reaction.

            B. Putting up with the bullies’ behaviors.

            C. Turning to the grown-ups for help.

            D. Acting brave and fighting back.

(   ) 57. According to the writer, the bullies’ purpose of bullying others is to _______.

            A. show their importance

            B. make people notice them

            C. shout and let out their anger

D. find people to take care of them

One possible version:

(A) Dear Mary,

There is nothing wrong with being heavier than other people. So don’t feel bad about your appearance. If you are upset, you might have an unhappy look. You needn’t feel embarrassed about being fat. Be confident about yourself and just take part in activities you enjoy. There is no need to be afraid of what people might say. Be proud of yourself and people will respect you more.

If you want to lose weight, you can eat more vegetables instead of junk food. Besides, exercise can make you fit. Enjoy your life!

Yours,

Wang Lin

(B) Dear Tom,

Playing football can keep you healthy and watching football match is really fun. But you might not get good grades if you spend too much time on football instead of study. So don’t forget to study first. If there is a match that you really want to see, only let yourself watch it after you have done your homework. When a class finishes, don’t talk to your friends unless you have understood everything the teachers said. If not, do some extra work, and only then talk about last night’s football match. Good luck!

Yours

Wang Lin
